FADE IN TITLE:

It all started with a dream…

FADE OUT

NARRATOR (V.O.)

FADE IN

EXT. MOUNT FUJI- MORNING

Mt. Fuji, peaked with snow, fills the screen, not unlike the Paramount logo. Then we zoom out, Fuji receding, neighborhoods appearing below. We pass trains and roads, valleys and rivers, until Fuji is just a pleasant view on the distant landscape.

TRICK SHOT. We pull through the Cosmo Ferris Wheel (see banner above), between the Landmark Tower and the Pan Pacific Hotel (landmarks in Yokohama),  and finally through the open curtains of a window and come to a stop at a desk beside it. Soft feminine hands on the keyboard of a laptop atop the desk.

INT. YUMI AND LOCO’S APARTMENT- MORNING

We see Yumi’s  sparkling eyes, skin warm and aglow with the morning sunlight pouring in through the window. She is sitting at her desk smiling, obviously reading something she finds very entertaining on the screen.

Suddenly there’s a burst of laughter from another room. She glances off in the direction it came from then back at the screen. On the computer screen before her we see it’s her TWITTER homepage.

We hear another explosion of laughter off screen, this time even louder!

The room is small but not especially so, and bare. Two walls are lined with bookcases. One wall’s bookcase is filled with hundreds of Japanese novels, and quite a bit of Manga, we see on closer examination. The other wall’s bookcase is filled with English books, both fiction and non-fiction. Mostly writers of some note, some not so famous- about half are African American- and quite a few American comics and some graphic novels as well. The floor is covered with eight immaculate Tatami mats. A third wall is a occupied by a decent sized closet as well as a rather large wardrobe cabinet. The final wall is a sliding door to an adjoining room.  The door is partially open and we can see it’s a bedroom.

In the dimly lit bedroom, where the laughter had come from, we can vaguely see  several framed portraits on the wall, plus an un-framed poster that doesn’t seem to fit in the room at all. There’s a window that, through a crack in the heavy curtains, we can see it looks out on a metal veranda, sunlight splashing through. Clothes are neatly folded on a clothes chair, tatami mats peek from beneath a plush area rug. Slippers at the foot of the bed, just so.

We see a full sized bed covered in intricately designed quilts, and a black man beneath them, lying on his back, not snoring but breathing rather heavily.  It’s Loco, still asleep but with a wide grin spread across his face. Suddenly, from him, yet another burst of laughter, and he awakes looking fully alert. Like a man possessed by a vision. He lays there a beat absorbed in and collecting his thoughts, and clearly loving what he’s thinking. Then he reaches over to the night table, turns on the light, grabs the pen and pad he keeps handily on the bedside nightstand, sits up and begins jotting down notes furiously. He hears Yumi’s typing in the next room.

LOCO

(while still writing)

Mornin’ Babe!

YUMI (VO)

( from the other room. In Japanese…this entire scene)

LOCO

Yep, I feel great!

YUMI (V.O.)

He stops writing and slowly stretches his back, testing its range of motion.

LOCO

Much better actually!

He resumes writing.

YUMI (VO)

He stops writing, reaches with his left hand to scratch his stomach, pinches and glances at his pudginess, frowns, and goes back to writing

LOCO

Just some coffee…maybe some yogurt, and a banana if we have any.

YUMI (VO)

He stops writing, surprised!

LOCO

Whaa? !How do you know?

YUMI (VO)

( a smile in her voice)

LOCO

Really? (pauses  a beat) Well, it was different

this time, though. More real!

YUMI (VO)

Loco doesn’t answer immediately, trying to jot it all down before it escapes him the way dreams do.

LOCO

It…was…I’m sorry what did you say?

YUMI (VO)

LOCO

Oh…yeah, but this time I wasn’t just the writer

and director…I was in it, too!

YUMI (VO)

She has a hearty giggle.

YUMI (VO continued)

LOCO

Never really tried it. Except the act I gotta put on

to get  through a day of bullshit here

in your lovely country.

He laughs sardonically at his own joke.

YUMI (VO)

LOCO

Nothing…

He finishes jotting down his thought, and stares pensively at his notes, then flips through the pad to previous notes. As he does we can see some pages are legible and some aren’t.

LOCO (cont’d)

…but, hell, I was just playing myself. Any fool can do that!

Yumi laughs in a curious manner, like she was telling a joke instead of hearing one.

LOCO (cont’d)

(to himself)

Fuck! Can’t even read half of this shit!

He gets out of bed, places the pad on the nightstand,  listening to Yumi giggling…and typing. He creeps into the other room where Yumi is.

LOCO

What you working on?

Yumi, surprised at Loco’s sudden appearance, jumps and shuts the lid on her computer

YUMI

LOCO

You know…sometimes I wonder if I even know the real you.

YUMI

LOCO

Seriously! Living with you is like living with a…psychiatrist.

YUMI

LOCO

It’s like your life is a patient you can’t tell

me about because of doctor -patient confidentiality.

YUMI

LOCO

Forget it. Lucky for you, I’m not an

insecure man. Or, I might think you were

up to something…

He pauses a beat and gives her a meaningful look. Yumi’s smile is as pure as the driven snow and mischievous as a child’s.

LOCO

Right. Anyway, I’m gonna go take shower…

Once Loco enters the bathroom and she hears the shower turn on she re-opens her laptop and continues typing…She types: 彼、”どんなバカでもできる”だって。 ハハッ!それって、彼にはうってつけじゃない。

And giggles.

INT. YUMI AND LOCO’S DINING AREA- MORNING

Loco, now fully dressed, casually in black jeans and a white dress shirt, open collar, no tie. He’s sipping coffee from an Obama for President mug, standing over his laptop resting on the kitchen table, reading something on the screen.

YUMI (VO)

(off screen in the Kitchen…water running, dishes rattling)

LOCO

A few…they really dug my last post.

YUMI (VO)

LOCO

Yeah…

YUMI

Loco looks at the ceiling, concentrating deeply on something…Then seems to come to a decision.

LOCO

You know what I’m gonna do, today?

I’m gonna write about the dream…

YUMI (VO)

LOCO

On my blog? Yeah, I’ve done it a couple of

times…but they were nothing like this dream!

YUMI (VO)

LOCO

Thanks.

Loco finishes the coffee, grabs his jacket off the chair back, and prepares to leave. At the door he stops…Yumi watches him, expectantly. He takes a deep breath and mumbles something inaudible.

YUMI

Loco, after a beat, turns, smiles at Yumi and shakes his head, no. Then he grabs his shoes from the rack and puts them on. He opens the door and the sun pours in. Then he turns to Yumi.

LOCO

Oh, yeah! Good luck with your

interview today!

He blows her a kiss.

YUMI

LOCO

Later!

YUMI

He walks out the door, and as soon as it closes behind him, Yumi turns and heads back to her computer. She sits before it, fingers hovering above the keyboard, looking troubled. The blank MICROSOFT WORD page with a blinking cursor seems to be mocking her…Her fingers are moving like she’s playing an invisible piano…

YUMI (VO)

On the screen, Japanese characters appear and disappear…

YUMI (VO)

On her desk beside her computer is a ornately framed picture of Loco and Yumi. They’re in a park, on a blanket, beneath a fully-bloomed Cherry Blossom tree. He’s resting his head on her lap gazing up into her eyes, and she down into his.

YUMI (VO)

(and the gentle patter of typing)

On the other side of her computer is another photograph. In this one, Loco is alone, at a computer, writing, a look on his face somewhere between whimsical and sad.

YUMI (VO)

(typing):

She steals a glance at the bedroom and smiles, as thoughts race through her mind.

YUMI (VO)

(typing)

We see a  Lebron James poster hanging on the bedroom wall.

YUMI (VO )

(typing)

She stops typing and takes a look at her left hand. Then resumes.

YUMI (VO)

(typing)

She stops typing, again. Lost in some sad memory. Then resumes.

YUMI (VO)

(typing)
